the stillness
Why Millennials Will Never Know Stability...& Don't Need It!
I’m not convinced that a lot of millennials will ever feel totally stable. I have some generation-x friends who I think could also fit into this category. Though there are some millennials who have means and feel relatively accomplished at their age, there is still a large portion of the generation that struggles with feeling ungrounded, listless, and lacking direction.
There’s a deeper reason why we relate differently to the human experience and the explanation for this can be broken down by examining the Pluto in Scorpio natal chart placement of most millennials. That’s why I think there are some generation x members who could potentially relate to this, due to their air energy and unapologetically free nature. However, I think it’s their emphasis on relationships, with Pluto in Libra, that ultimately gives them some sense of stability.
Scorpio energy is different though. Millennials always get the reputation for being deeply emotional. We are steeped in the reality of uncovering the depths of society and ourselves, with a particular focus on the shadow, and we remain resilient and unique in personality, all scorpionic traits.
I’ve started to think that water energy isn’t meant to ever truly be stable but, can only ever be still (and there is a vast difference). There is a structure to earthly stability that looks totally different in a body of water. The most structure water can have is calmness; the ability to remain still, stoic, while treading peacefully. That’s the part I think millennials need to master. Instead of seeking things we believe will finally give us the power of control that we desperately crave, we must embrace that our truest control mechanism is internal.
Yet, our internal world will never actually be unmoving. Therefore, our greatest challenge is about creating a quality of presence from within. When I talk about “within,” I mean within anything. That includes yourself, a household, a job, or a country.
That which inhabits you does not have to control you emotionally.
While many millennials were raised by baby boomers, who have the greatest agency of stability, we have struggled to separate what we were raised in versus where our destiny is taking us. There are other millennials, raised by generation x, who may not struggle with impermanence or change but, perhaps have lost internal structure in their pursuit of safety and security.
The act of stillness can apply for both, or really anyone feeling plagued by a lack of control of the structures we experience.
Millennials need to embrace that stopping life will likely never happen again the way it did for many back in 2020 but, the goal is to become so unbothered, you’re no longer internally thrown off by every deep wave or calm ripple.
If I may, here are a few ways you might start implementing this mentality shift:
Take your focus off of the surface and into the center. Obviously, you can’t ignore all of your surface level duties. You have to work, you have things to start and complete. However, allow that to be a light focus while your intense focus remains on keeping your center calm or cared for.
Respond to things- don’t react (if you can). As a baseline, try to react internally, whether rage or excitement is passing through you, respond to what is happening directly, while allowing your emotional reaction to remain private. That means responding without your emotions or inner feelings infused in your response. This is some high level shit. Some people can just do this naturally but, most people give even just the smallest bit of insight on their inner emotions with just a simple word or tone. This one is definitely a continued work in progress, as really all of these suggestions are.
Lastly, flow with the noise. Allow the hectic nature of our reality to fade into the background like Lofi music. The sound of the train, the person screaming in the street, the cart scratching the floor, the tapping of the keyboard; these are all background noises of an internal volume that is set to a cool, calm, or whatever you like . You’re active and still moving; you’re just internally stable.
So, be still.
